Shin A-lam Wins Silver in Women's Epee Final at Asian Games

2014-09-22

South Korean fencer Shin A-lam won a silver medal at the Incheon Asian Games on Monday.

The 27-year-old lost to China’s Sun Yujie 6-5 at the women’s epee individual final held at Goyang Gymnasium in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.

Shin tied the score at 5-5 with 13 seconds remaining in the second round, forcing a one-minute sudden death. She allowed a touche, or a hit, to Sun with 21 seconds left in the sudden death round.

Shin was among the South Korean athletes most anticipated to win a gold medal at Incheon. During the London Olympics in 2012, she lost to Britta Heidemann of Germany in what AFP picked as one of the most controversial judging decisions in Olympic history.

Choi In-jeong, who lost to Shin 15-10, in the semifinal held earlier Monday, won a bronze medal, along with Kong Man Wai Vivian of Hong Kong, who lost to China’s Sun 15-9 in the other semifinal. The Incheon Asian Games has no third-place decider in fencing.

So far, South Korea’s women’s fencing team has won two gold medals, two silver medals, and two bronze medals at the Incheon Asiad.
