S. Korea Beats Taiwan 6-3 to Win Gold in Baseball at Asiad

2014-09-28

South Korea’s baseball team beat Taiwan 6-3 to win a gold medal at the Incheon Asian Games.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning at Munhak Stadium on Sunday, Team Korea added four runs with a game-tying walk by Kang Jung-ho, a go-ahead run by Na Sung-bum and a two-run single by Hwang Jae-kyun.

South Korea’s reliever An Ji-man shut out two crucial innings through the eighth, after the team's starter Kim Kwang-hyun allowed three runs on five hits.

South Korea won all five games at Incheon, including a 10-0 shutout against Taiwan in the group competition on Wednesday. South Korea went on to beat China 7-2 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Japan, who lost to Taiwan 10-4 in Saturday’s semifinals, won a bronze medal with a 10-0 victory over China in the third-place decider held prior to the final.

South Korea’s baseball team has won four of the six Asian Games ever held since the sport was incorporated into the Asiad in 1994. Sunday's gold medal marks the country’s second consecutive Asiad baseball victory since winning the Guangzhou Games in 2010, where it also beat Taiwan 9-3.

Japan won the inaugurating event at Hiroshima, while Taiwan won the Doha Asian Games in 2006.
