Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur has broken South Korean football legend Cha Bum-kun’s seasonal goal-scoring record for a Korean playing in the European league.
The 24-year-old forward scored two goals and set up another against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Thursday, helping Tottenham defeat the home team 6-1.
They were Son’s 20th and 21st goals of the season, including his goals scored in the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League. No other South Korean has scored 20 goals during a season in the European league. Cha Bum-kun scored 19 goals for Bayer Leverkusen during his 1985-86 season in Germany.
Son also overtook another South Korean legend, Park Ji-sung, with 29 career goals in the English Premier League, a feat he achieved in only his second year with the prestigious league. Before the match, he was tied with the former Manchester United midfielder at 27 career goals.
Son scored for the first time in six matches since scoring his 19th goal of the season against Bournemouth on April 15th.
