President Moon Jae-in has ordered the government to devise measures to expand welfare, and as a result, boost job creation, calling social welfare an economic growth engine.

In a meeting with his senior aides on Thursday, Moon delivered the order, saying that the government should place top priority on ensuring the safety of the people.

He stressed the government’s efforts to build a strong nation that takes responsibility for the lives of the people, noting an official apology to the victims of deadly humidifier disinfectants, an extensive increase in the coverage of national health insurance and policies to guarantee the minimum cost of living.

The president urged effective help for those in need, such as elderly people living alone and financially struggling families with seriously ill patients.
