The Education Ministry has announced a preliminary plan for revising the College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) or suneung as it is known to Koreans.

The ministry proposed two options for reform on Thursday. The first is to add just two more subjects that will be subject to absolute evaluation: social studies/science and a second foreign language/Chinese classics.

The second option is to evaluate student achievement in all CSAT subjects using absolute methods.

Currently, only English and Korean history are evaluated using absolute methods.

The ministry plans to hold four public hearings to collect opinions from students, parents and teachers on the reform proposals before announcing a final reform plan at the end of this month. The revised CSAT format will be applied from the 2021 academic year.
