Heads of the minor Bareun Party's constituency chapters support former presidential candidate Yoo Seong-min as the party's interim chief.

The party's lawmakers and chapter heads held a meeting in western Seoul on Wednesday to discuss the makeup of the new leadership following the resignation of former Chairwoman Lee Hye-hoon over a graft scandal last week.

Most of the chapter heads called on the party to set up an emergency leadership committee headed by Yoo.

The calls are expected to have an impact on a general meeting of the party’s lawmakers set to open later Wednesday.

The Bareun Party has been suffering an internal rift with one group supporting a merger with the main opposition Liberty Korea Party for a united conservative bloc and the other calling for independent survival. Both Lee and Yoo are strong advocates of the Bareun Party's independent survival.
