The presidential office has decided to request an investigation into the alleged fabrication of documents regarding former President Park Geun-hye's activities during the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster.
A senior Cheong Wa Dae official said on Friday that the top office plans to formally request the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office look into the allegations on Friday after further review in the morning.
Presidential Chief of Staff Im Jong-seok on Thursday told reporters that documents were found suggesting that the timeline regarding Park's briefings on the day of the disaster were modified to cast the former president in a more favorable light.
The documents suggest modifications were made to change the time of the initial report from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on April 16th, 2014 -- the day the ill-fated ship capsized.
The former administration had claimed Park was informed about the sinking at 10 a.m. and issued her first instructions 15 minutes later.
The presidential office says it views the modifications as constituting the crime of producing a false public document.
