South Jeolla Province has proposed to the government to exclude the agriculture and farming sectors from renegotiations of the South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement(FTA).
The province is concerned that the negotiations could pressure one-sided sacrifice of the agriculture sector for the sake of manufacturing and the service industry despite the government's vow that there won't be concessions in agriculture during the FTA talks.
If agriculture is included in the FTA negotiation, South Jeolla officials urged the government to work toward a number of measures to protect the agricultural sector. Among them are sharply easing conditions to activate import safeguards on beef, pork and dairy products, restricting U.S. beef imports based on cattle's age.
