Former National Intelligence Service(NIS) director, Won Sei-hoon, will face additional charges in the current trial for his alleged involvement in the online smear campaign before the 2012 presidential election.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutor's office said Thursday that Won was indicted without detainment on the charge of bringing about losses of government money.
Won is suspected of using six-and-a-half billion won of the spy agency's budget running cyber teams for illegal political activities between January 2010 and December 2012. Prosecutors believe that his actions amounts to embezzling government money as he is suspected to have backed illegal political campaigns during the Lee Myung-bak government.
Prosecutors also indicted former senior NIS official Lee Jong-myeong on the same charges. Prosecutors discovered that during the period that Lee served as the spy agency's third deputy director, some four-point-eight billion won worth of NIS funds were funneled into the cyber team.
