Report: The suicide note left by Kim Jong-hyun, widely known as Jonghyun, was disclosed on Tuesday. It came a day after the 27-year-old was found unconscious at a rented studio apartment in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul.
Nine, a member of the rock band “Dear Cloud” and a close friend of Jonghyun, posted the note on her Instagram after consulting with Jonghyun’s family.
The head of Dear Cloud’s management company said it isn't clear when Nine got the note but said she delivered it to Jonghyun’s family as soon as she got it.
In the note, Jonghyun said he was broken inside and that depression had slowly gnawed on him and swallowed him up.
He also wrote he doesn’t know why he’s feeling so much pain, adding there's no one in the world who is in more pain than him.
Jonghyun expressed particular despair about the disclosure of every detail of his life to the public.
Police said they will not carry out an autopsy upon the wishes of his family and as it appears certain the singer took his own life.
An altar has been set up for Jonghyun at Asan Medical Center in Seoul. A separate space has been provided in the hospital’s funeral hall for fans to pay their respects. Despite the freezing weather, hundreds of fans lined up to pay their condolences.
Amid the outpouring of grief, songs that Jonghyun had written or performed are rising up the charts.
On Tuesday, “Lonely,” a song on an album that Jonghyun released in April ranked number one on Melon music chart. Another song on that album, “End of a Day,” and “Breathe” a song sung by Lee Hi and composed by Jonghyun, ranked in the top 20.
Jonghyun was the lead singer of S.M. Entertainment’s five-member group SHINee, which debuted in 2008 with the EP “Replay.” His funeral will be held on Thursday.
