President Moon Jae-in has bestowed a congratulatory sword to dozens of military officers who recently rose to the rank of general.

At a ceremony held at the presidential office on Thursday, Moon gave the Samjeonggeom to 56 newly appointed brigadier generals in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force.

Overseeing the first such ceremony since he came into office, Moon reminded the generals of the spirit of the traditional sword, including defending the nation, unification and national prosperity.

He also urged them to lead the country’s military so it's trusted and loved by the Korean people.

Lee Sang-chul, first vice chief of the National Security Office at the top office, told reporters that no previous presidents had directly bestowed the sword to one-star generals before, explaining the role was usually assumed by the defense minister.
