A leading Japanese daily says the United States has requested South Korea to not provide the North Korean Olympic delegation with any gifts or tools that they could sell or use when they return home.

Japan's Asahi Shimbun on Tuesday quoted multiple sources familiar with U.S-South Korea ties as saying that Washington conveyed to Seoul that "not even a single hockey stick should be given" to the North Korean delegation.

The daily explained that by making such request, the U.S. was revealing that it has no issues with the South footing the bill for accommodation and meals but is against it providing tradable gifts or goods to the North's Olympic delegation.

The daily said the U.S. apparently made the request to ensure the impact of international sanctions on Pyongyang stays intact.
