Rival parties have raised their voices in unison to call on the government to draft swift countermeasures in response to General Motor's decision to close down its factory in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province.

Ruling Democratic Party Floor Leader Woo Won-shik said during a supreme council meeting on Wednesday the government needs to take action to ease anxiety over the local economy in Gunsan. He added the party will also try to help the region by creating a related task force.

Representative Park Joo-sun, co-leader of the new minor opposition Bareunmirae Party, urged President Moon Jae-in to declare Gunsan a special employment disaster zone and provide the city with administrative, fiscal, and financial assistance.

Representative Cho Bae-sook, who heads the minority Party for Democracy and Peace, urged for similar moves, claiming the region's economy is being ruined.

Earlier on Wednesday, the largest opposition Liberty Korea Party released a statement, demanding the Moon administration come up with measures to assist GM factory workers in Gunsan.
