Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea Archbishop Hyginus Kim Hee-joong issued a public apology over a sexual violence case involving a senior priest in Suwon City.
At a press conference in eastern Seoul on Wednesday, Kim said he apologizes to the victims of sexual violence and their families as well as all who were disappointed and angry.
He expressed his remorse that those who were supposed to uphold celibacy as a mark of ethical conscience and religious devotion had committed such a disappointing and shameful act.
He said the church will atone for the incident and carry out strict punishment according to the regulations of the church as well as society.
He said the priest in question was no longer carrying out his duties and is proceeding with legal procedures for punishment.
Last week, KBS found that the senior priest of the Catholic Diocese of Suwon had attempted to rape a female volunteer during a missionary trip in South Sudan in 2011.
