The annual Baeksang Arts Awards kicked off on Thursday evening in southern Seoul, celebrating the best television and film productions.

The 54th ceremony presented awards for 12 categories for movies and 14 for television.

In the movie section, political thriller "1987: When the Day Comes" scooped up the Grand Prize as well as Best Screenplay.

Kim Yoon-seok won Best Film Actor for his role in the movie, with Park Hee-sun also winning the top supporting actor award. 

The film is based on the events that led up to the June democratic uprising in 1987 in South Korea.

The Best Director award went to Kim Yong-hwa who directed "Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds" while "The Fortress" won Best Film.
