The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Friday that it will host the fourth Hangeul Idea Awards to discover new values of the Korean alphabet.
Comprising of three sections, content, IT and design, the competition is open to anyone with bright ideas to develop new products based on hangeul, regardless of their nationality or age.
Possible examples include an animated movie based on hangeul characters, a hangeul word program for smartphones or stationery goods featuring the Korean alphabet.
Applications will be accepted for a month starting from July 20 and prize winners are set to be announced in September.
Fifteen winners will be selected, including one for the grand prize, three for runners-up and nine for third-place prizes. The grand prize winner will be given 15 million won.
Two foreigners will be selected for special awards, which were newly introduced to encourage participation by non-Koreans.
Award winners will receive expert consultations and assistance in commercializing their ideas, applying for patents or participating in exhibitions if they want.
