South Korea says it has proposed North Korea draft an English translation of the Panmunjeom Declaration for review at the United Nations.
An official at Seoul’s Foreign Ministry revealed the proposal on Thursday amid suspicion the new English-language version of the inter-Korean agreement specified the timeline “within the year” on declaring a formal end to the Korean War. The expression was said to be absent in the original version.
The official said the South first proposed to the North on April 30th that they draft an English version to submit to the UN, about two weeks after the inter-Korean summit.
The official said the North responded on July third to offer its opinions on the English translations proposed by Seoul and the actual negotiations over the English expressions used began later.
The official said related officials from the two Koreas held several discussions on the matter mainly via communication channels at UN Headquarters in New York, noting the latest draft was the most faithful reflection of the "contents and meanings" of the Korean version.
