Typhoon Kong-rey has come and gone from the Korean Peninsula.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) says Kong-rey headed toward the East Sea in waters near Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province at around 12:40 p.m.

The typhoon earlier made landfall in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province just before 10 a.m. and passed through the southern region of Busan city and Gyeongsang provinces for three hours.

Kong-rey reached northwest of Ulsan city by noon and is forecast to move out toward the seas north of Dokdo islets by 6 p.m.

Kong-rey was a mid-sized typhoon while passing Okinawa but had weakened by the time it reached the southern Korean Peninsula.

The weather agency said Kong-rey left the peninsula earlier than expected at a speed of 53 kilometers per hour.

Typhoon advisories however remained in place even past 1 p.m.

The KMA forecast strong coastal winds in most parts of the region through Sunday and advised precautions in facility management.

Kong-rey is the 25th typhoon of this year.
