South Korea's Ministry of National Defense has tapped a woman as its spokesperson for the first time in its history.

The ministry says Choi Hyun-soo, a military specialist reporter at the Kukmin Ilbo newspaper, will begin her new job on Monday along with four others newly appointed to high-ranking posts at the ministry.

Having covered the Defense Ministry since 2002, Choi was the first female reporter to be regularly stationed in the ministry’s press room.

She became Kookmin Ilbo's specialist reporter in 2009, the first time any local media outlet had selected a woman to write on military affairs.

Thanks in part to her trailblazing work for other women, Choi has received several awards, including 'Female Reporter of the Year Award' from the Korea Women Journalists Association in 2011.
